Volkswagen ended production of Beetle
German car
manufacturer Volkswagen plans ceased production of the VW Beetle in July, 2003, the Stuttgarter Nachrichten reported. The
last VW Beetle left the production line in Puebla, Mexico marking the end of a nearly 70-year history and more than 21.5 million
cars. Prior to ending production, only 53 Beetles were produced daily in Puebla.
The last Beetle to be made in Europe
left the production lines in Germany in 1978.
The last air cooled Beetle was marked No. 21,529,464. It
went to the museum in Wolfsburg, Germany, home of VW headquarters. Adorned with
a Mexican flag made of flowers, the car was serenaded by a mariachi band playing
``El Rey,'' or ``The King.''
