Your gas gauge acting up?

My gas gauge reads fine til I get down to between a half and a quarter of a tank and then it pretty much reads empty. I would like to get this fixed, so my question to this list with such a wealth of knowledge is: Do I start with the sending unit? (access hole already cut in floor) OR Should I start looking for another gauge to try?

• sounds like a sending unit issue to me

• bet ya dollars to peanuts it's the sending unit.  Those damn things are just wire wrap potentiometers (like the dash light dimmer).
