How to load a canoe on top of your bus

QUESTION:

Anyone had experience carrying a canoe on their westy's roof? I was going to use the foam blocks and figure out some way to tie it down(luggage rack, front bumper etc.). I don't want to damage the fiberglass though.

REPLIES:

Use a Thule rack system.  The "High Lift" risers just clear the roof, keeping my canoe off the fiberglass.  The only trick is to install the rear risers far enough back to allow the top to open without binding on the mounts.  The front goes above the luggage rack.  For the '71 I'll just reveres the set-up.

Even though the top is strong enough for the static weight of a canoe, every time you hit a bump the canoe will exert way more force than I'm comfortable with.  The Thule system is unbelievably strong, has never given me a problem and gives me a place to mount ham radio antennas.

The cost can be a bit steep though.  I remember that the whole set-up ran around $350 for the risers, load bars and canoe mounts.  However it's been money well spent.

I have asked the same question on FMBC's site...........Interesting topic here, I'd like to custom build something that would not interfere with the poptop....for less than $100.

Check out an inflatable roof rack.  It may be a 'no holes drilled' idea
