I decided to use the sink and refrigerator for the first time on my '89 Vanagon. I tried
to light the propane pilot for the fridge to run her on propane. After over two hours I
finally got her to light and she's working great. I had to run the fridge on 110 and run
the stove for a while before the pilot would cooperate. I'm certain these have not been
used for years if ever. Have others had this experience?
The line to the fridge is tiny, the fridge draws almost no gas, so air in the line takes a
while to purge. You'll find that a full tank of propane (about 12 pounds) will last a
month in hot weather with the temp control set all the way to cold. You can even make
ice in it if you still have the tiny trays. You may find that if you only have a few
things in the fridge a tiny R.V. fridge fan may help. I prefer to stock mine with stuff
from the house fridge after the Westy fridge as been running for a day. Then, as long as
the door stays shut, it's cold brew time and no heavy, smelly cooler to deal with!
If you're even thinking of running yours on 12v just give up now. There are plenty of
folks that say it works just fine while driving, but you'll soon find that those people
really don't mind warm beer.
I heard a full tank (3 gallons) would last about 17 days. I myself haven't been able to
find out because I twisted off the bleeder knob on the auto-stop valve and can't even fill
the tank till I find another one. Seems as if the only place to get it rebuilt is
GoWesty.com.
I tried to take it apart and almost stripped the heads on the screws. Any ideas?
Maybe I will just buy a new tank with a built in valve.
