Transmission oil discussion

Billy:  I replaced the accelerator cable and the carb opens fully when the pedal is floored, but I couldn't get the '58 to go over 35 mph, and it is pathetically slow off the line (pedestrians on the sidewalk pass me by).   So I take the creeping bus out today and head for Howard's farm, to see if he can figure out what is going on.  Halfway there the bus starts backfiring like nobody's business, and from then on it drives like the Crusty bus (not really, but a gazillion times faster, top speed of 49 mph). My guess is that the carb was clogged with something and it broke free on the ride.
Does anybody have any ideas of what might have happened, or have had any similar experiences?
The latest problem is that it kills when I come to a stop sign, but this kicks ass over the last problem.

FYI - the 58 has new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, valves set at .006, fresh tank of 93 octane, 20-W50 oil since February (5 miles on it) - changed today to another 2.5 quarts of 20-W50. Still 6 volt.

Thanks for any help, or sharing experiences. I am currently trying to understand where the notch in the pulley goes in setting the timing.  Adjusting the fuel/air mixture on the carb eludes me, too

Crusty:  Billy, in answer to your question, I am filling it with 80-90 that says on the back that it is gl 4-5 standards.  I cannot find strictly GL4 anywhere.  And I have looked in a buttload of places!
If anyone would care to shed some info, please feel free!  I would use whatever people have tried and proven effective.

Rick Zavala:  I'm forwarding your message on oil (or is that earl) to my good friend Jim Diaz.  Before installing his Berg 5, he did a lot of research on transmission oil and can probably answer your questions. Great guy too.  When you bring Winnie out to SoCal, we will set up a street race-Fontana (home of the Napa 500 and California Speedway) to Palm Springs.  His Type 1 (69/88 + Berg 5) versus Winnie and the Crustman.  What do you say-winner gets all the Tillamook (that is from Wisc isn't it?)  We will have Bill May officiate (ex Wisconsin now in San Diego).

Woody:  GL5 trans. fluid will corrode the syncro's in a manual transmission!
Jack Maynard first reported these finding to the type 2 list, then many oil specialists and the manufacturers websites confirmed this to be absolutely TRUE. They claim the use of GL5 in a transmission with brass or bronze sicro's will cut the life expectancy in half!
So unless you really enjoy swapping tranny's and spending $600 a pop, then go for it !

Brian Whittling:  I just bought a gallon of GL-4 lube for my latest tranny last week at a local NAPA auto parts store... Sta-Lube brand, in a gallon jug, for about 8 bucks.  If you have NAPA's up there in 'da nort' (or "Behind the Cheddar Curtain"), you may want to give them a try.
I've also been told you can buy GL-4 lube at Jiffy Lube, but you have to bring in your own container as they pump it out of a 55 gal drum.
