Why am I in Charge?

Author's note: This is a filk about Henry Blake, written to the tune of "Hip to be Square"
by Huey Lewis and the News.

I studied med in Illinois, then the Army called me.
I became a Lieutenant Colonel, still doing surgery.
Got command of a MASH unit, with the enemy at large.
My people are first rate, to the last Private and Sarge.
But decisions aren't my strongest suit.

Why am I in charge
Why am I in charge

Pierce and McIntyre like to joke, they flew my desk away.
The Majors Burns and Houlihan, always point brass my way.
I gotta young company clerk, who could easily take charge.
Knows what I'm gonna say, has me sign things small and large.
Poor Tuttle, we need him so.

Why am I in charge
Why am I in charge
Why am I in charge
Oh I am in charge

I like trying my hand at golf, with booze I score better.
Got a corpsman on my hands, who wears frills and feathers.
Our camp priest is a blessing, Mulcahy's presence keeps us sane.
One weak point's a nurse named Scorch, but my heart is for Lorraine.
That Steele might've been some leader,
Though went off with a singing march.

Well, here they come...

Why am I in charge
Why am I in charge
Why am I in charge
So I am in charge

Charge.. Charge.. I am in charge..
Charge.. Charge.. Why am I in charge...

The End. :)
